2010 Sportsman Rules

All rules may be changed or added to at any time!

• Highland Speedway will not tolerate fighting (see fighting policy on the last page of these rules).  Anyone (driver, pit crew, owner, etc.) who leaves the car’s pit area and enters another driver’s pit area will be asked to load the car and leave the premises!
• It is the responsibility of all participants to know the rules.
• Situations not covered in any of these rules will be handled at the discretion of the track promoter as they arise. 
• Decisions of the track promoter are FINAL!!!
• Any violation of these rules are considered cheating and upon the first offense, all Highland Speedway points earned through the date of the offence will be stripped from the driver; the driver will start with zero points the following week.

BODIES:
1.  American made streetcars or replicas only, 1960 through current: full frame, rear wheel drive only.  No convertibles or station wagons.  Aluminum bodies allowed.  18” side panels.  Maximum 8” spoiler.  Minimum 108” wheelbase.  Stub cars will be allowed. Steel leaf springs only. No mono leaves.

2. Roof/top stock appearing can be fiberglass or aluminum. 

3.  Hood: No working hood scoops.  Hood may be opened for air cleaner clearance only.

4.  Floorboards: Floorboards required.  If stock floorboard is removed, 22-gauge steel is required.  Reinforce with X brace, 1-1/2” minimum from frame rail to frame rail.

5.  Rear firewall must be installed between driver and fuel cell.

6.  Trunk sheet metal may be removed.

7.  All glass and chrome must be removed.

8.  Windshield: Must be of Lexan or safety glass.  In lieu of windshield, drivers opening must be covered with 1/2” minimum, 1” maximum wire mesh.  Minimum of three upright bars of 3/8” gauge steel rod welded to roll cage in front of driver 6” apart.

9.    No outside bars.

10.  All ends must be capped.

11.  Bumpers: Factory style rubber nose and tail allowed.  No sharp edges - must be capped and returned back to frame.  Rear loop may be round pipe 1-3/4” maximum with six pegs maximum to frame loop: Must be inside trunk.All cars must have bumpers securely bolted or welded.

12.  Wheels and tires: Right side wheels must be reinforced.  Maximum 8” wide wheels.  Must be E-mod tires.   Bead locks on right side only are optional. Tire grooving approved.  9/16” or 5/8” wheel studs must be used on right side.

SUSPENSION:
13.  Minimum three-wheel brakes.  Brake adjusters are allowed inside the car.

14.  Five-lug stock appearance spindles.

15.  Stock lower arm control arms in stock location - may be switched per make. Must be Chevy to Chevy, Ford to Ford. Mono balls allowed.

16.  Weight jacks may be used; screw type only, cannot be adjusted from driver’s compartment.

17.  Racing shocks may be used.  No coil over springs allowed.  Racing shocks may be mounted out board on the front end.  Racing shocks may be used on the rear, but must be mounted in stock location.

18.  Any OEM stock rear end, equipped with stock drum or disc brakes allowed.  No after market brake calipers allowed. Floating hubs allowed.

19.  Any upper pull bar allowed must be mounted from rear end forward.  Pan hard bar and J bar will be allowed.

20.  Locked rear ends mandatory. Floater rear ends allowed.

21.  Stock lower controlling arm on rear trailing arms with stock bushings or neoprine. Also monoballs and swedge tubes allowed. Stock location of frame – same hole on rear end.

22.  After-market brake pedal assemblies allowed.

23.  Dual master cylinder allowed, may adjust in cockpit.

24.  Engine location: Foremost spark plug shall align with and/or in front of upper ball joint.

25.  Tubular upper “A” frames allowed. Swedge tubes are allowed. Can run hiems on upper A frames on top.

26.  Weight:     Minimum weight 2900 for all cars.

ENGINE:

27.  Can mix and match frames and motors. Flat tapit cams only – no roller cams.

28.  400 blocks allowed.  No aluminum blocks. Dart blocks allowed. 

29.  Heads: Aftermarket or angle plugs allowed.  No aluminum heads.

30.  Intakes and carburetors: Holley 500 cfm 2-barrel #4412 only, No 4-barrels.  Must pass gauge inspection.  Removal of chokes assembly and air horn only.  No other alterations allowed.  Aluminum one-piece sand-cast intakes allowed.  Cast iron intakes allowed.  One 2” adapter allowed.  Air cleaner maximum height from air horn base 5”.
 
31.  Aluminum pulley on crankshaft optional.

32.  Any distributor allowed.  No mag or crank trigger.  MSD allowed.

33.   602 Chevrolet Crate engine with 4 barrel (350 hp) will be allowed in 2010.  Must have Highland Speedway seals. Sealing location to be determined at a later date.


CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSIONS:

34.  Production transmissions only.  No internal clutch type.

35.  Clutches: Any OEM style clutch allowed.  No racing pressure plates.  10” minimum. 
Aluminum flywheel allowed. 
          Multi-disk clutches will only be allowed on Allied legal motors per 2010 Allied rules (AARA).

36.  Blow proof ball housings required.  Blankets optional.  Automatic transmissions must run explosion-proof blanket or 1/4” steel scatter shield over converter.

37.  All cars are required to have a drive shaft loop 12” from end of transmission.

38.  All drive shafts are to be painted white.  No aluminum drive shafts allowed.

39.  Must have working torque converter.

40. Front safety loop not to exceed 1-3/4” O.D. round tubing with maximum loop, not to exceed 5” as measured from front ride of tubing in front of radiator.

41.  A brace for the radiator may be used with an upright on each side and brace to the frame in front of “A” frame.  A maximum of 1-1/2” O.D. x minimum 1” I.D. pipe of tubing.

42.  All sportsmen must have a box-type roll cage of at least 1-1/2” O.D. tubing, .095 minimum thicknesses.

43.  All cars must be equipped with a minimum of three protective bars inside each door.

MISCELLANEOUS:

44.  Frames: All frames must be stock OEM. Must be of stock OEM thickness.  OEM frame must run from front bumper to behind rear axle.  No under slug. Must have chains front and back for towing.  Must have loop to protect fuel cell. 

45.   Halo loop must be a single bar.

46.  Must run mufflers.  No zoomies.  May exit left side but noise level must be below decibel limits.

47.  Any OEM style battery allowed one only, 14” x 8” maximum.  Must be mounted with a 3/8” rod.  Must be mounted behind fire shield and out of driver’s compartment.

48.  Fuel cell required.  Must be contained in an approved container.  Fuel cell not to be mounted lower than center of rear axle, with minimum two straps 1/8” x 2”.  Electric fuel pump allowed only when block is not machined for mechanical pump.  Mandatory oil pressure control and a manual fuel shut off to be within driver and safetyman’s reach.

49.  Fan shroud required.

50.  Quick steers optional.

51.  Any oil pan approved.  No dry sumps.

52.  No titanium or other exotic metals allowed.  (Body, engine or transmission.)

53.  Fuel: Racing pump gas only. E85 allowed. No alcohol, nitrous oxide, propoline oxide, nitrous methane, or additives.

54.  All cars must have sturdy seat belts and safety harness, three- inch belts required.  Must be 5 yrs or newer and date tag must be visible. IMPORTANT: Five-point safety belts and flame resistant racing suit required.  Gloves recommended.  All drivers must have an approved racing helmet and window net.

55.  All cars running an electronic fuel pump must have an oil pressure activated shut off switch.

56.  A switch to disable all power to car must be installed behind driver within reach of safetyman at shoulder height and must be clearly marked on/off.

57.  A specific part may be protested for $100.00. $50 goes to car being protested if found legal and $50 to the track. Motors can only be checked for roller cams and carburetor.

58. There must be an 18 inch number on each door. There must be a 5 inch number on the right side headlight or on the upper right side windshield. All numbers must be easily visible and readable by the track officials.  In the situation of duplicate numbers the track officials may assign a letter to you.  It is your responsibility to add this letter to your car; failure to do so will cause you to be scored last for your event.


IF IT DOESN’T SAY YOU CAN DO IT, IT IS NOT LEGAL.

Situations not covered in any of these rules will be handled at the discretion of the track officials as they arise.

DECISIONS OF THE TRACK OFFICIALS ARE FINAL!!

FIGHTING POLICY
First offense - The first time a person starts a fight, they would be banned from Fairgrounds one year from date of occurrence.
Second offense - The second time a person starts a fight, they would be banned from Fairgrounds for three years from date of this occurrence.
Third offense - The third time a person starts a fight they would be banned from Fairgrounds for life.
NOTE:  Anyone returning to the Fairgrounds during the time they are banned will be charged with criminal trespassing. Fairgrounds consists of the pits, the grandstand, the parking lot and the

 

Track Guidelines

Highland Speedway reserves the right to refuse admittance to anyone.

Drivers must be 14 years of age to race at the Highland Speedway. Drivers 14 and 15 must have permission from the track to race in the UMP Late Model, UMP Modified, and UMP Sportsman division.

Minor drivers must have BOTH parents sign a minor release form for the driver to enter the race track. Minor drivers will sign the minor form each week. 

Each driver must enter their car to race every night. Entry fee to race is $5 per car to be paid by driver. Entry fee will go into each division's point fund.
