CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS FROM HIGHLAND SPEEDWAY Highland Speedway kick off its 46th year of racing on Saturday night, April 7th, on possibly the coldest night in the 45 year history of the Speedway. One hundred and five cars braved the cold weather to start the 2007 season. The 00 of Randy Korte started off the evening by having the fastest qualifying time in the UMP Late Model division of 24 cars. It was a repeat of the 2006 opener when Randy Korte had a Grand Slam night winning his heat, the dash, and the Feature. Korte grabbed the win in the first heat over Chad Zobrist, Tim Manville, and Matt Weidner. Second heat saw Mark Faust lead Rusty Schlenk, Rick Salter, and Craig Smith. Third heat saw another Faust take the win, this time it was Billy who led Rusty Griffaw, Michael Kloos, and Steven Unterbrink. It was again two Fausts in the dash chasing Korte. Order of finish was Randy Korte, Billy Faust, Mark Faust, and Chad Zobrist. The UMP Late Model Consi saw Mike Schulte cross the finish line ahead of Mike Bryant, Brent Helmkamp, Barry Quade, Michael Jacober, Dan Jacober, Matt Santel, Brad White, and DNS Matt Koch. King Kong Korte led the pack in the Feature, then Billy Faust, Chad Zobrist, Rusty Schlenk, Mark Faust, Rusty Griffaw, Rick Salter, Matt Weidner, Michael Kloos, Tim Manville, Craig Smith, Mike Hammerle, Mike Schulte, Dewayne Keifer, Mike Bryant, Steven Unterbrink, Brent Helmkamp, and Tyler Deibert. There was another sweep in the UMP Modified division of 18 cars. Ed Lenhardt swept his heat, the dash, and the Feature. Ed took the first heat over Paul Bailey, Tim Hancock, and Brent Mullins. Scond heat winner was Mike Vanderiet, Jr leading Kenny Wallace (yes, this is the NASCAR driver you see on TV), Brian Bielong, and Chad Evans. Dash race list was Ed Lenhardt, Paul Bailey, Mike Vanderiet, Jr, and Brian Bielong. Chasing Lenhardt in the Feature were Mike Vanderiet, Jr, Tim Hancock, Brian Bielong, Kenny Wallace, Paul Bailey, Chad Evans, Chad Sellers, Brent Mullins, Kent Robinson, Dave Thornton, Cody Stilwell, Eric Goetter, David Barker, Jesse Wisely, Andy Oswald. Matt Verbeck, and Scott White. There were 23 UMP Sportsman drivers who showed up to race, Justin Ketrow proved he was top dog in that division. He also swept his division winning the first heat, the dash, and the Feature. Following Ketrow in the first heat were Nathan Schmitt, Jason Bohnenstiehl, and Aaron Melton. Second heat saw Steve Stevenson beat out Greg Spencer, Mark Bohnenstiehl, and Jimmy Cummins. Third heat went to Dustin Knerrer over Robbie Eilers, Pete Cory, and Billy Knebel, Jr. The Consi saw Justin Durbin take the win over Andy Casper, Scott Drew, Rob Lee, John Huegen and Nick VanDenbergh. Also in attendance were Kelly Vogel and Matt Hancock. Chasing Ketrow in the Feature were Dustin Knerrer, Nathan Schmitt, Robbie Eilers, Steve Stevenson, Greg Sencer, Jason Bohnenstiehl, Billy Knebel, Jr, Pete Cory, Mark Bohnenstiehl, Justin Durbin, Jimmy Cummins, Bryan Slover, Russell Eilers, Scott Drew, Aaron Marquardt, Andy Casper and Aaron Melton DNS. Tim Driscoll swept his heat and the Feature in the 15 car UMP Bomber division.He led Mike Ripperda, Jr, Larry Smith, Jr, and Jake Hewitt in the first heat. Second heat saw Jason Zobrist beat out Eric Rensing, Dwayne Bateman, and Danny Ripperda. Feature order of finish after Driscoll was Jason Zobrist, Mike Ripperda, Jr, Eric Rensing, Larry Smith, Jr, Danny Ripperda, Billy Kruep, Jeremy Pate, Mike Ripperda, Sr, Dwayne Bateman, Steve Leach, Brant Kehrer, John Cory, Adam Pate, and Jake Hewitt. There was another sweep in the UMP Hornet division of 25 cars. This time it was Ryan Eilers who won the second heat over Tracy VonRohr, Michael Fulk, and Matt Hamblin before he won the Feature. First heat saw Nick Knebel race to the finish line first followed by Josh James, Jon Ripperda, and Justin Shaw. Third heat saw Riley Warren win over Jason Schmidt, Tom Hellmann, and Aaron Wood. Consi winner David Shaw had Steve Gorka, Jr, Scott Shaw, Dan Ricklefs, Travis Horner, Marcus Kruep, Shawn McCalls, Andy Hellmann, and James Hale. Feature order of finish after Ryan Eilers was Nick Knebel, Riley Warren, Josh James, Jon Ripperda, Tracy VonRohr, Aaron Wood, Matt Hamblin, Jason Schmidt, Tom Hellmann, Michael Fulk, Joe Swip, Kory Reigel, Steve Gorka, Jr, Scott Shaw, David Shaw, Justin Shaw and Chris Dicken. Highland Speedway races every Saturday night. April 14th is the next night of racing. Grandstand gate opens at 5:00 pm. General admission is $12 for ages 16 and up, $5 for ages 10 - 15, and 9 and under are free with a paid adult admission.
